Three films to see this weekend: Melbourne Queer Film Festival

tim-and-topolinoHolding the Man … was one of the best Australian films of last year. Remembering the Man revisits the story in documentary form, built from an impressive collection of archive footage, photographs, re-enactments and extensive audio interviews with Conigrave himself. The real power of the documentary over Holding the Man’s fictionalised account is the way Remembering the Man can illustrate the hostile environment of Australia in the ’70s and ’80s towards homosexuality.

‘I will survive!’: Australia’s 10 best LGBT films

john-and-tim“To bastardise the words of Darryl Kerrigan: this film goes straight (so to speak) to the gay pool room. Working on the project for more than five years, co-directors Nickolas Bird and Eleanor Sharpe built a rich emotional and educational journey. They celebrate the romance between lovers Tim Conigrave and John Caleo as well as venturing into darker territory, investigating the AIDS pandemic that hit their generation and exposing all-too-recent examples of bigotry in Australian media and culture.”
